Itinerary for The Grand Tour of Switzerland

Day 1: Arrive in Switzerland

Arrive in Zurich at your preferred time. Zurich, the “metropolis of experiences” offers a unique mixture of attractions that you can enjoy by yourself on your first day. Depending on when you arrive you may want to explore Zurich’s Altstadt (Old Town) or perhaps wander the car-free Niederdorf neighborhood that’s filled with local boutiques and cafes.

Day 2: Zurich > St. Gallen

Enjoy breakfast at the hotel then head out on the first leg of your journey through Switzerland. On your way to St.Gallen take a pitstop at the Rhine Falls, Europe’s largest waterfall. As you continue toward St.Gallen, take in the beautiful scenery at your own pace, stopping in small villages along the way. Upon arrival in St.Gallen, explore the Abbey precinct if you wish, with a cathedral and Abbey Library which has been accorded UNESCO World Heritage listing and belongs to the top attractions along the Grand Tour of Switzerland.

Day 3: St. Gallen > Davos

Before beginning heading to Davos, enjoy breakfast in your hotel to fuel up for your ride. On your drive today you’ll pass the village of Appenzell. The Appenzell region is known for rural customs and traditions and is well worth a stop to enjoy the local culture. Then, continue your drive stopping next at Heidi’s Village in Maienfeld – home to the protagonist of Johanna Spyri’s novel of the same name. Venture on toward Davos – your home for the evening.

Day 4: Davos > Lugano

After breakfast at your hotel, you’ll begin your journey to Lugano in the south of Switzerland, where you have several opportunities to experience the Grand Tour attractions. Lugano is one of the most beloved parts of Switzerland, influenced heavily by the nearby Italian culture, Lugano is the Swiss version of Lake Como and boasts the same charm and beauty. We highly recommend a stroll around the historical old‐town or an excursion to Sa Salvatore or Monte Brè. Today’s activities and when you arrive are entirely up to you, so take your time exploring along the way or enjoy more time in Lugano!

Day 5: Lugano > Zermatt

This morning after breakfast you’ll leave the beautiful Mediterranean style of Lugano in the direction of more mountainous views in Zermatt. On your way lies Ascona – your last touch of Italian influence before diving deep into the Swiss Alps. Today’s journey is one of the most breathtaking routes, so be sure to take photo-stops along the way to Täsch which is your last stop by car before you continue by train on Zermatt, under the shadow of the famed Matterhorn.

Day 6: Zermatt > Montreux

Enjoy a delicious breakfast at the hotel this morning before heading out to explore this charming town. A trip up the exhilarating open‐air Gornergrat railway is not to be missed as it offers some of the best views of the Matterhorn and surrounding mountains. Back in Täsch your route begins with a stunning drive up through the Valais, heading through Sierre, Sion, Martigny and Aigle. Continue along the shores of Lake Geneva to your home for the night in Montreux. The town of Montreux is surrounded by vineyards bordering the breathtaking snow‐covered Alps. If you’re traveling in June or July be sure to catch the Montreux Jazz Festival!

Day 7: Montreux > Gstaad

After breakfast, you’ll drive through the orchards and terraced vineyards of the Lavaux to Lausanne and from here continue your journey to Freiburg. Make stops along the way to enjoy this beautiful drive! Further on your way you will pass the Greyerzer region, with its rolling green landscape before coming to your final stop of the night in Gstaad.

Day 8: Gstaad > Lucerne

Enjoy breakfast at your hotel before heading to the adventure capital of Switzerland – Interlaken. Here you can enjoy lake cruises or watch paragliders perform in the sky, but the real highlights are the majestic Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau summits. Here, you can visit the top of Europe at over 12,000 feet! If you have some time left before you head to Lucerne, Bern, UNESCO World Heritage is the place to spend it.

Day 9: Lucerne > Zurich

Enjoy your last breakfast in Switzerland this morning in one of the most beautiful cities in the world – Lucerne. Explore some of the highlights like Chapel Bridge or the famed Lion Monument. If you have time, perhaps you could take a cruise around the stunning Lake Lucerne. End your journey on a drive back to Zürich for rental car drop‐off at the airport and return journey.
